Whats The Shed Project
The Shed Project started out as a desperate need of mine for more space in my house. I decided that I needed to add a shed to my backyard. What I really wanted was for my brother, Ron, to help me build it...or to let me help him build it. He has a way-cool barn-like shed that he built in his backyard. He also made several modifications to the shed in my girlfriend’s yard that I helped him with.
When I first brought up the idea of building a shed, Ron wasnt too keen on it. We were in the middle of putting a fence up in my backyard. That particular project started out being a lot of fun, but got monotonous pretty quick. Deciding to begin in the middle of our Florida summer probably wasnt the best idea we had. While I wasnt initially able to get him to commit to building my shed, he was more than willing to go out with me and help evaluate other shed options. We went to a local place that sells wood sheds and installs them on your property. We looked at both wood and aluminum shed kits that are available at Lowes and Home Depot.
After looking at everything and what it was going to cost, Ron finally volunteered that he could build a shed for a lot less money than I was looking to spend that would be way better and bigger than the ones we were looking at.
So, The Shed Project began.
Our first step was to find out what the local building codes say about shed building. After some head scratching trying to understand the codes and a phone call or two, we found out that if we kept the shed at 100 square feet or less we did not have to get permitted. That also allowed me to put the shed anywhere on my property that I wanted to. Any bigger, and we would have had to observe a 7 offset from the side of my property and a 10 offset from the back. Plus we would have had to submit plans and have inspections...stuff we really didnt want to hassle with.
So we had to stay within 100 square feet. On the plus side, we could go as high at 30.
I knew I wanted the shed to look like a barn and I wanted to have a loft. Ron and I started scanning the internet for shed and barn pictures. We finally came up with several ideas on which to base the design.
Since I didnt want the shed to look too boxy, we decided on the dimensions of 8x12. Thats only 96 square feet, so we were under the limit by 4 whole feet!
So Ron went to work making some drawings. Soon a shed will be born.
