If you really need an outdoor shed but your budget is even tighter than your storage space, you can cut costs considerably by building it yourself. You dont have to be an expert carpenter or woodworker either. What you do need is patience, a few simple tools and the ability to follow instructions. If this is your first shed project, it can feel a little overwhelming making it yourself, but the result is so much better than one of those prefab shed kits. 1. Planning Ahead Makes A Great Shed
Sit down and get a plan together. First, you have to figure out how big you want your shed to be. What are you going to use it for? Keep in mind that youre probably going to accumulate more stuff over the years, so leave yourself some room to grow. Next, to check the building regulations for your area (this is VERY important!). Now, think about location. Where will it fit, be easy to access, and not damage any underground cables or water lines? Once you know the basics, hit the home improvement store or go online and find some detailed blueprints. If youre a newbie, keep it basic and simple. You can always spruce your shed up later.
2. Foundation Considerations
Your shed needs some sort of foundation. You can use wood, a skid for example, or concrete. If moisture isnt a concern in your area, then opt for the wood - that will allow you to relocate the shed later, if you need to. If your area gets excessively damp, go for concrete. You won;t be able to move the shed, but youll keep it from rotting over time.
3. Insulate
Wood walls will require some sort of insulation. You can insulate easily using lattice between two pieces of plywood or wide planks. To retain heat more efficiently, youll also need to use beams.
4. Door Styles
Believe it or not, this is where Ive seen a lot of my friends and neighbors mess up. This is where you want to measure twice, and cut once! Make sure that you get your measurements right, so the door will open and close properly. Also, you want to make sure your opening is wide enough to easily move items in and out. Again, dont just plan around what you have now - think ahead (unless you want to park your future riding mower in the garage beside your car!)
5. Roof Details
Last but not least, the roof. It not only has to look attractive, but be tough enough to withstand the weather in your area. If you get a lot of snow where you live, you need to take into account the load bearing weight as well. By far the most popular roof styles are the barn style roof and the gable style roof. If youre aiming for one of these, youll be happy to know that they arent all that difficult to build. Note that you will need to build trusses, so make sure you keep to the written plans precisely.
6. Finishing Touches
For a great shed, ensure you finish it off right. Make sure all the trim work is done, and your wood is properly treated and sealed.
