Build Day 1 A good foundation

Build Day 1 A good foundation

We want the shed to be up and off the ground a bit. My backyard has never flooded, but its better to be safe than sorry. Im also kind of concerned about termites, after seeing the damage they did to my old fence.

Rons’ original plan was to build the foundation on top of pressure treated 4x4s. I didnt want any wood to be touching the ground, so we decided to go with cinder blocks. My neighbor happened to have a large stack of them that he was getting rid of and was happy to donate to the cause. Thanks, Claude!

We bought some 2" caps, which is a rectangular block that has the same footprint as a cinder block. We laid down and leveled three rows of them, each with a total length of a little under 12 feet. Then the cinder blocks sit on top of them.

The floor joists lay across the three rows of blocks.

We like free stuff. Ron has a knack for finding discarded building supplies. In the picture above, the only wood I paid for is the longer pieces attaching the joists. There should be two more joists...one on each end. I guess those will wait for Day 2.

Here is a close-up of how the joists attach. Im told the metal things are joist hangers...a very appropriate name. Except mine arent hanging. Its because our cinder blocks are under the actual joists instead of the frame around the joists.

Here is a view from my back porch. Ill try to take a picture each day from this same spot. Youll notice a nice stack of plywood in the foreground. We got that for free, too!
